The first stone for the construction of the building was put on 23 rd January 1878, and begun the works on the 3rd of May of that year. It was made honoring to the King of Spain, Alfonso XII. It was inaugurated on 23rd of January 1880. It is a building of eclectical line that does not answer to any certain style, but it mixes the most typical elements of each one. The materials that were used in its construction were: Ashlars; marble; jasper and parquet floors of pine. Some of these materials have been renewed replacing them with more modern ones. This building sheltered the Provincial Museum till the creation of the new building in Abelardo Sanchez's park.
